In 1985, Emirates flew its first route out of Dubai with just two aircraft. Then, just as now, their goal was quality and not quantity. Since then, Emirates has evolved into a global travel and tourism conglomerate known the world over for their highest standards of quality. Emirates experienced rapid and consistent growth, above 20 per cent annually, and has been profitable for the past 22 years. Financially self-sustained and unprotected, Emirates carried 22.7 million passengers in the 2008-09 financial year – 1.5 million more than the year before – and declared US $268 million profit on a a revenue of US $12.6 billion – 10 per cent better than the year before. Among the world’s top five most profitable airlines, the carrier has thrived on competition with Dubai's Open Skies policy where 120 airlines currently fly into Dubai. About half of the 37 million passengers who travelled through the city last year were carried by Emirates. With a fleet of 145 modern, wide-bodied aircraft, Emirates is one of the youngest fleets in the skies. The first to order the Airbus A380, eight have been handed over with a further 50 to come, making it the largest customer of the Airbus superjumbo. Emirates announced a historic aviation aircraft order at the 2007 Dubai Air Show, signing contracts for 120 Airbus A350s, 11 A380s and 12 Boeing 777-300ERs, worth an estimated US$34.9 billion in list prices. The first A350 will be delivered to Emirates in 2014. With 48 Boeing 777s pending delivery, Emirates is set to become the largest 777 operator in the world. Overall, Emirates presently has over 147 aircraft pending delivery, worth approximately US$49 billion in list prices. Emirates announced four new routes for 2010 – Tokyo (28th March), Amsterdam (1st May), Prague (1st July) and Madrid (1st August). Emirates currently files to 100 destinations in 62 countries across Europe, North America, the Middle East, Africa, Indian subcontinent and Asia-Pacific. Emirates code-share with Air India, Air Malta, Air Mauritius, Continental Airlines, Japan Airlines, Korean Airlines, Oman Air, Philippine Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, South African Airways, SriLankan Airlines, and Thai Airways. Emirates includes Emirates SkyCargo and Destination & Leisure Management (D&LM), which manages Emirates Holidays, Arabian Adventures and Emirates Hotels & Resorts. The airline is part of the Emirates Group, which ncludes associate companies Dnata, Mercator, Transguard and Galileo. |
