Morning Talk: Update on the reform of Malaysia’s Data Protection Laws

CCIFM organized a Morning Talk on the Reform of Malaysia’s Data Protection Laws on April 23, 2025, at the CCIFM Business Center. The event, held in collaboration with Luther Corporate Services, aimed to provide company directors, senior executives, and compliance professionals with an in-depth understanding of the recent amendments to Malaysia’s Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA) and the upcoming compliance obligations.

The talk focused on the latest reforms introduced by the PDPA Amendment Act, which came into force in phases beginning April 1, 2025. These reforms introduced significant changes, including the appointment of data protection officers, mandatory data breach notifications, updated rules on cross-border data transfers, and data portability obligations. Participants were also introduced to the anticipated guidelines and standards expected to further specify and detail these new obligations.

During the session, the speakers dissected the implications of the new regulations, explained the compliance requirements, and provided actionable insights into how companies can adapt their current data protection systems to align with the evolving legal landscape. The importance of implementing these guidelines correctly was emphasized, as it is key to building a compliant and effective data protection framework.

Lukas Kirchhof, Senior Legal Counsel at Luther Malaysia, shared insights from his experience advising international investors on compliance and data protection systems in Malaysia.

Julie Schwarz, Associate at Luther Malaysia, contributed her expertise in investment law, offering a legal perspective on the reform’s impact on business operations.
