The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP)

The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) is located strategically at the confluence of one of the world’s busiest straits, the Melaka Straits. PTP is strategically located for transshipment activities as it is very close to the international shipping routes. It takes vessels accessing PTP only 45 minutes to divert to the port.

PTP’s value propositions lies in its strategic location, efficient port services, expandable terminal handling capacity and competitive costing. PTP recorded a total volume throughput of 9.0 Mil TEUs for the financial year of 2018.

PTP currently has 14 berths totaling 5.04 km in linear wharf design. Directly behind the berths is the port’s container yard, which is one of the largest container storage facilities in the region with the capacity to handle up to 10.5 million TEU annually. Currently, PTP has 58 Super Post Panamax quayside cranes, the container yard is serviced by 163 Rubber Tyred Gantry cranes and 430 PMs which provide ample support for fast terminal operations.

PTP is well connected to the hinterland. Cargo movement from major industrial estates is convenient especially with PTP’s 5.04 km access road linking the port to the second Malaysia-Singapore expressway; and the north-south highway; ensuring that the port is connected all the way up to north of peninsular Malaysia/the Thailand border. Adding to the port’s land, sea and air infrastructure support, the rail line that runs through PTP is directly linked to the national rail grid which connects Singapore and the southern area of Thailand.

The 1,500 acres Pelepas free-zone land located directly behind the port makes it ideal for manufacturing activities and commercial activities such as value adding activities, cargo consolidation, international procurement centers and regional distribution operations. The free-zone area is integrated with the port terminal, which allows for seamless movement of cargo.

PTP’s terminal operations are backed by state-of-the-art information technology system which links all port users. By synergizing all of the port’s operations and communication centers, the I.T. network system enables free-flow of real-time information between shipping lines, forwarders, shipping agents and the port.

As a world class port offering state-of-the art facilities to port users, PTP is the international gateway for South Malaysia. PTP is also located within the 2200 square kilometers development area of Iskandar Malaysia, one of Malaysia’s new regional economic corridors/growth areas. PTP is significant to the government of Malaysia’s plans to further develop and turn Johor into a new regional economic growth area. PTP provides the south of Malaysia with a high level of both national and international accessibility and mobility through its well-developed integrated port and free zone.
